If we sign Widjnaldum and Chilwell here's how I see the squad hopefully shaking out.

------------------Karius-----------------
Clyne---Matip-----Lovren--Chilwell
------------Hendo----Can-------------
Mane----------Firmino--------Couts
-----------------Sturridge---------------

------------------Migs-------------------
Flanno--Klavan--Sakho--Moreno
-------------Grujic---Stewart----------
Origi---------Llalana-----Widjnaldum
-------------------Ings---------------------

That gives us plenty of depth and impact from the bench, plus we also have Gomez, Brannagan, Ojo providing youth to play cup games and in case of injuries, and Lucas for experience at defensive mid

Leaves departures from
Balo, Benteke, Allen, Milner, Smith, Randall, Wisdom, Illori

I'd be very happy with that setup.

Well the result sucked but let's not get too down over this. The reality has always been top 4 is a stretch and the main focus of this season was getting the team playing the right way. Personally I'm much happier with how the play went vs. how I'd feel if I'd watched the dross Man Utd served up (apart from the smash and grab of course) . We were far superior in possession and made a string of chances and the players gave it 100%.

Having said that it again highlighted a few issues we need to tweak going into next year including most notably the GK (how many times has De Gea saved MU already? ), of course our set pieces once again, and most importantly from this game, we also need figure out where the goals are coming from in midfield given Llalana/ Milner (and Coutinho/ Ibe etc. ) haven't scored nearly enough, especially if you play 1 striker as a false 9. Again a Sanchez/ Mane/ Mahrez type player is key IMO otherwise we still have too many no.10's we have all over the park.

Despite this result, I firmly believe we're on the start of a journey to get where we need to be. let's not ignore how different this side is playing vs. what we saw under Rogers (which was much like Utd are playing now! )

How much would it cost to replace Coutinho? At least 80-90m IMO so don't see the point of selling, particularly as he's our game-changer in the team and we often look to him to unlock sides that have stubborn defenses.

If we review our core squad as now stands we have two teams of roughly

Mane - Firmino - Salah
Coutinho - Hendo - Gini
Milner - Lovren - Matip - TAA
Karius

Then

Origi - Sturridge - Ings/ Solanke
Llalana - Can - Grujic
Andy - Klavan - Gomez - Clyne
Migs

IMO In the forwards/ midfield we are strong with only Ings/ Solanke and Grujic still needing to prove themselves, but all show enough potential to deserve their chances. With Andy coming in were even OK at FB IMO.

The only piece that reall worries me now is CB if either Lovren or Matip get injured or struggle for form. Gomez has great potential but untested, Klavan is a solid pro but not first team starting standard. I think we need someone to push Lovren.

I sincerely hope we keep Coutinho and just pay up to solve the VVD situation for his sake and ours.

Been trying to figure out why Keita is such a priority given our midfield and was wondering if it perhaps means Klopp thinking about going back to a two man midfield and the 4-2-3-1 he played in 15-16

If Lucas leaves, only realistic options for he base of a 4-2-3-1 are Hendo, Can and Gini (and even he is perhaps more attacking in nature) so adding Keita would make sense, and a Hendo/ Can and Keita partnership would be very effective IMO. Can then play Coutinho or Llalana at 10, and Mane and Salah out wide, with Firmino at no. 9 to link play.

Hendo and Can were very effective in the double pivot until injuries broke them up - could we see a return next year if we land Keita?

Sales :
Markovic, Sakho, Moreno, Clyne, Stewart, Lucas and a few others like Kent etc. to bring in c.50m

Incoming :
Salah 35m
Tah 35m
Pereira 30m
Sessegnon 10m
Keita 40m
Total 150m

Leaves us with a starting team of
Salah - Firmino - Mane
Coutinho - Hendo - Keita
Pereira - Tah - Matip - Milner
Migs

And alternatives in
Origi - Sturridge
Lallana
Gini - Can - Grujic
Sess/ Gomez - Klavan - Lovren - TAA
Karius

We'd also have Ings, Woodburn, Ejaria and Ojo.

Does the transfer window ever remind anyone of a drum full of water. drop in the slightest pebble and the ripples spread out of control, and then just when you think they've died down, an echo returns to kick things off all over again.

A few thoughts from the game

First of all, that is a game we could so easily have lost in the past so hats off for a clean sheet and a well marshalled Defence. could be crucial

However i think it's also fair we made life difficult for ourselves going forward for a number of reasons
1 - I understand a midfield of Lucas, Can, Gini gives us stability, but it also lacks the creativity, intensity and movement required to break down teams IMO. movement and energy was exceedingly flat across the whole team in fact, very few dangerous runs being made anywhere on he Park
2 - Which often resulted in Coutinho dropping into midfield to create something. looked pretty deliberate, but it also left limited options on the wing in his place which narrowed the game even more
3 - likewise if was rare to see anyone trying to get in behind from the right. Firmino is an outstanding player but not blessed with the yard of pace required and he tends to cut inside, and Clyne going forward is frankly poor
4 - Origi struggles without space. sorry but he's still developing and they found it too easy to shackle him without being pulled wide or out of shape. He needs to move more to create space for others
5 - Those rare times we did turn over the ball with their team not in a deep Defence, we just didn't move the ball forward fast enough to capitalise on their lack of defensive organisation
6 - Finally he also changed things up way too late. It was obvious the changes we needed (and he made the right ones) but why did we only give them 20mins? I was almost anticipating changes at half time given how flat we were. or at least on 60mins

So with a more defensively minded midfield, limited movement and intensity to pull their defence out of shape, limited threat from out wide and a lack of killer in the box, we just struggled to look dangerous.

I think it's obvious we need to bring in a real winger and some FBs next year but I'm still disappointed Klopp went this route and didn't try to pose more of a threat at home.

For West Ham I sincerely hope we see a midfield of Can, Gini and Llalana and I'd also go with a front line of Coutinho, Firmino and Sturridge. I'd also be badly tempted to play Milner at RB and Moreno LB. We need to win the next two.
